Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park rises majestically high in the clouds, with elevations ranging from 2,227 m to 4,127 m. Created to protect the rare and awe-inspiring mountain gorillas that inhabit its dense, mist-shrouded forests, the park is also an essential refuge for the endangered and playful golden monkey. Its lush landscapes, dramatic volcanic peaks, and extraordinary biodiversity make it one of Uganda’s most remarkable and captivating destinations.

Beyond its breathtaking wildlife, Mgahinga holds deep cultural and historical significance, particularly for the indigenous Batwa pygmies. As the forest’s “first people,” the Batwa possess an intimate and ancient knowledge of the land, passed down through generations. Their traditions and stories offer unique insights into the secrets and wonders of this mystical region.

The park’s most striking features are its three conical, extinct volcanoes, part of the awe-inspiring Virunga Mountains that stretch along the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These towering volcanoes are not only biologically diverse but also provide dramatic and unforgettable backdrops for hikers, explorers, and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

Mgahinga Gorilla National ParkThe Virunga Volcanoes

  • Mount Muhabura (4,127 m) — The tallest peak in Mgahinga, Muhabura means “guide,” as the Batwa once used it to orient themselves in the dense forest. At its summit lies a crystal-clear, tranquil crater lake approximately 36 m wide. From this breathtaking vantage point, panoramic views stretch across Uganda, Rwanda, and the entire Virunga chain, offering an awe-inspiring perspective of this remarkable region.

  • Mount Gahinga (3,474 m) — The smallest of the Virunga volcanoes, Gahinga is named after the local practice of tidying volcanic debris into neat cairns. Its serene, swamp-filled crater, about 180 m wide, is surrounded by verdant vegetation and creates a peaceful, almost magical landscape for visitors.

  • Mount Sabinyo — Known for its jagged summit and deep, dramatic ravines, Sabinyo has a striking and distinctive profile. Its peak marks the rare point where Uganda, Rwanda, and the DR Congo converge, offering a unique and breathtaking vantage point over three nations simultaneously.

Caves and Batwa Heritage

Steep volcanic slopes conceal mysterious caves formed by ancient lava flows. One of the most famous, Garama Cave near the park headquarters, holds profound sacred significance for the Batwa. Walking along the Batwa Trail allows visitors to explore these fascinating caves, which were once used as shelters during conflicts and as safe storage for treasured items. This trail provides a rare glimpse into the life, culture, and history of the Batwa people.

Visitor Centre & Activities

The Ntebeko Visitor Centre is the vibrant gateway for park adventures. Exhibits at the centre highlight the rich and diverse ecology of the Virunga Volcanoes.
